ALEISTER CROWLEY
The Book of the Law
The Book of the Law (Liber AL vel Legis) by Aleister Crowley is a foundational text for the modern occult movement and the central scripture of Thelema. Written in 1904, Crowley claimed to have received this work from a spiritual entity named Aiwass while in a state of mystical consciousness in Cairo, Egypt. The book introduces the concept of Thelema, a philosophy that champions individual will as the highest law, famously encapsulated in the phrases “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” and “Love is the law, love under will.”
The text is divided into three chapters, each ascribed to different deities: Nuit (the goddess of infinite space), Hadit (the spirit of life and motion), and Ra-Hoor-Khuit (the god of war and vengeance). Through these voices, the book challenges traditional religious and moral structures, encouraging readers to seek self-discovery and liberation.
The Book of the Law has influenced numerous movements within the esoteric and occult realms, inspiring individuals to explore self-determination, spiritual sovereignty, and the unfolding of personal destiny. For students of mysticism, Crowley’s teachings offer a complex yet compelling view into the exploration of will, consciousness, and spiritual freedom.
