GEORGE ORWELL
A Clergyman's Daughter
Dorothy is the daughter of Reverend Charles Hare, rector of St. Athelstan’s in Depression-era Suffolk, England. As a devoted housekeeper, she engages in good works, maintains positive thoughts, and pricks her arm with a pin whenever a negative thought arises.
While she diligently crafts costumes for the church school play, she is haunted by the poverty around her and the mounting debts she cannot pay. Suddenly, she finds herself in London, wearing silk stockings and carrying money, but she can’t remember her own name.
This novel follows a woman on a bewildering journey marked by amnesia as she wrestles with questions of faith and identity amid a landscape of unemployment and hunger. It is a masterful satirical work by one of the great writers of the twentieth century.
