HENRI FRANKFORT
Kingship and the Gods
This classic study highlights a fundamental difference in perspective between the peoples of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. By examining the evolution of kingship in both societies, Frankfort reveals that, despite similarities due to cultural growth and geography, key differences arose from the distinct natural conditions each society faced. The annual flooding of the Nile Valley instilled in the Egyptians a sense of confidence in the permanence of established structures and a belief in life after death. In contrast, their Mesopotamian counterparts viewed the often harsh and unpredictable forces of nature with anxiety.
Originally published in 1948 and now featuring a preface by Samuel Noah Kramer, Frank’s remarkable work illustrates how the attitudes toward nature in Egypt and Mesopotamia influenced their concepts of kingship. While both societies viewed the king as a mediator with the gods, the Mesopotamian king was seen as the leading citizen, whereas the Egyptian ruler was regarded as a divine descendant of the gods and the earthly representative of Horus.
